Betway Secures Two New Licenses

Gaming operator Betway, owned by Super Group, has secured gambling licenses in Poland and Iowa.

Iowa has become the 11th US state that the sportsbook and online casino site is present in, and Betway hasn’t held back in launching its services there.

Two very different new markets for Betway

After receiving the two permits, Richard Hansson — President and Chief Operating Officer of Super Group — said:

“We are delighted to further Betway’s US presence with the addition of another live market there, as well as to enhance our formidable competitive position in Europe with the new license in Poland.”

Hansson continued: “This progress illustrates our focus and execution as we bring Betway, the premier and unified global online sports betting brand, to customers across markets and around the world.

“In our core geographies, we continue to thrive with market-leading positions, scale and financial flexibility, operating a proven, cash-generative business.”

A growing US presence for Betway and Super Group

Betway, which has significant sports betting presence in Europe, will now serve players wishing to wager on sporting events in the Hawkeye State. Sports betting has been live here since August 2019, which followed on from legislators making it legal earlier that year.

Since then, Iowa has grown into a multi-million dollar market. In 2020, operators generated over $41 million in revenue — with players betting more than $575 million between them. From this, state tax revenue surpassed the $2.8 million mark.

Going into 2022, Hansson doesn’t see Super Group’s growth across the US and elsewhere in the world slowing down. He said:

“Heading into 2022, we expect the pipeline of new market expansion to be active and to continue both internationally and in the US, where the acquisition of Digital Gaming Corporation (DGC) provides us access to a group of eleven states. In our core geographies, we continue to thrive with market leading positions, scale and financial flexibility, operating a proven, cash generative business.”

Poland: A hidden opportunity?

Betway is well-known in Europe not only for offering its sports betting services across much of the continent but also due to its various sponsorships with professional clubs. In Germany, for example, it has partnerships with Hertha Berlin, VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga — as well as Schalke 04 in the second division.

These sponsorships could well help Betway in establishing itself in Poland, too. In fact, the company has said itself that it expects to use its existing awareness to grow here.

Sports betting in Poland has been legal since 2009, which is relatively recent compared to a lot of other European markets. As a result, the country is still maturing in this respect.

The Central European country has enjoyed a significant rise in its sports betting revenue figures recently; the market was worth roughly 1.5 billion PLN ($379.56 million) in 2020, up from around 999.1 million PLN ($252.76 million) in 2018.

Betway will compete with Poland’s largest sportsbooks, which include Unibet and STS.
